WORD: The Home Tab/Ribbon

The Microsoft Word Menu Bar has been "upgraded" to a Ribbon.

MAC Users: You still have a Menu Bar, if you can’t find what you are looking for on the Ribbon try looking in the Menus.

At the top, you have Menu tabs.  Each tab has a Ribbon.

You will see that the commands are grouped on the Ribbon to make it easier for you to find what you are looking for.

Home Tab/Ribbon (Part 1)

UNDO GROUP

The First group is "Undo."  In this group, you can undo the last few things you did in the document and redo them if you undo too many.

To undo something click on the arrow pointing left.  To redo something click on the arrow pointing right.

There is supposed to be a limited number of undo commands, but I have never run into it.

CLIPBOARD GROUP

The Second group is the Clipboard.  The Clipboard is magic.  Anytime you copy or cut something it goes onto the Clipboard, and you don’t see anything happen, then when you want to paste it, you just click on paste and it will put what you cut or copied wherever your cursor is.

Cut removes what item you cut from the place where you had it.  Copy leaves the item where it is and allows you to paste the same thing somewhere else in the document.

You can have up to 24 items on the Clipboard

AND get this

That Clipboard is the same one for PowerPoint, Excel, Access, and Outlook.  That means you can copy something in, say, Excel and then paste it into Word, etc.

You will also find the Format Painter in the Clipboard group, this is a magic paintbrush that will copy the formatting you have put on some text and by brushing it over text in another place in your document, you will get the same formatting.

You will also find the Special Paste options if you want to do something specific with the item you are pasting.  See the little arrow under the word Paste, that indicates there is something more to see if you click on it.

NOTE:  Most group have a “more options” button in the lower right-hand corner of the group.  If you click on that you will get new options related to that group.  As an example the more options button in the Clipboard group will open the clipboard window and show you everything you have put on the clipboard, you can then pick and choose what you want to paste.
